A HEALTHIER ME

Duration: 5-weeks

Target market: Whole foods plant-based (WFPB) recipe marketplace

My Role: Designed the project from conception to product

Completed: Extensive research, personas, defined user problems, ideated pragmatic solutions, built wireframes, created lo & hi-fi prototypes, and created a design

Solution: Customizable recipes to include all eaters

Challenge: Many individuals have dabbled in eating a WFPB meal. However, many omnivores may shy away from WFPB diet stating reasons like the taste, ideology, and poor opinion of vegans. Stakeholders wanted to design an app that creates WFPB meals but manages to include the non-WFPB audience as part of the WFPB conversation.

Solution: The app A Healthier Me was designed to attract all people to try and maintain a habit of incorporating WFPB meals into daily life of all people. The thought being over time WFPB diet will become mainstream and encourage people to adopt it as a lifestyle.

Research

The problem is complex as it asks designers to create an inclusive food experience for all eaters but without the use of meat or dairy products. Hence, I decided to break down the larger problem into several sub-categories.

Empathize & Ask Questions

Methods

Various research methods were used & people were questioned about their various health and lifestyle choices. This gave a better picture of individuals who choose to follow a WFPB lifestyle from those to did not.

Tried both types

Survey research asked various questions including how often people tried a WFPB meal and how likely they were to eat more WFPB meals.

The last question was particularly informative which is highlighted in green. It demonstrates that people who have not tried WFPB diet were not very keen on trying it.

Interviews

Individual interviews of people who practiced different eating lifestyles such as WFPB, omnivores, and individuals who have tried both were conducted.

WFPB Lifestyle

Choose it:

Better for their physical and mental health

A lower carbon footprint

Felt it gave them more energy

Choose it:

More convenient to eat whatever is available

Prefer to eat a diversity of food

Miss eating meat

Choose it:

Don’t feel satiated unless they eat meat

Something they are accustomed too

Don’t like the taste of veggies

Omnivorous Lifestyle

People who choose WFPB lifestyle do so deliberately. Those who try it but don’t stick to it follow the path of least resistance. Those who are omnivores are not interested in trying a WFPB.

The recipes will be designed for these three categories of people.

Moving forward

Working Understanding

Ideation

Initial Concepts

Provide an option where recipes can substitute meat as an option for the vegan foods.

Provide educational health material that highlights the advantages of consuming a WFPB meal, into the recipe.

Have a panel next to the recipe that shows how much lower the carbon footprint is if the person eats a WFPB meal versus the various non-veg options.

Design, Test, Iterate

Make recipes where meat can be substituted for the veggie option.

Provide educational health material that highlights the advantages of consuming a WFPB meal.

Have a panel next to the recipe that shows the lower carbon footprint if the person eats a WFPB meal versus the various non-veg options.

Low Fi Design

Along with recipes, a calendar is added to remind users to try their favorite recipes at a regular interval to encourage the WFPB lifestyle.

High-Fi Prototype

A hi-fi prototype was generated based on the corrections recommended by peers.
